Elon Musk and eToro Launches New Function, Allowing Users Trading Financial Instruments via Twitter

Yesterday, eToro announced a partnership with Twitter to launch the "$Cashtags" function. With this function, Twitter users can view real-time prices of stocks, cryptocurrencies and other financial products, and even trade investments on Twitter through eToro.

The $Cashtags went live this Thursday. The function is said to be expanded to cover more financial instruments and asset classes in the future, as users can already view index fund data and stocks of some companies via Twitter. The data is from the analysis software TradingView.

"As we've grown over the past three years immensely, we've seen more and more of our users interact on Twitter [and] educate themselves about the markets," Yoni Assia, eToro's CEO, told CNBC in an interview.

"There is very high quality content, real-time content on financial analysis of companies and what's happening around the world. We believe this partnership will enable us to reach those new audiences [and] connect better the brands of Twitter and eToro."

Musk has said he wants to turn Twitter into a so-called "super app" that offers users financial services, much like WeChat, a social media application from China.
