Recently, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) alerted the public to beware of phishing websites posing as WhatsApp.
According to the announcement, at least 20 reports of such scams have been submitted this year, with victims losing at least S$46,000.
The scam website poses as WhatsApp's official website embedded with a genuine WhatsApp login QR code. After the victim clicks the fake website through a search engine and scans the QR code to authorize the login, the scammers can access the victim's WhatsApp account on their own device and use the victim's contact to conduct the next step of the scam.
After that, the fraudster poses as the owner of the account and pretends to be in urgent need of money with various reasons to ask for money.
Even more dangerous is the fact that victims are often able to log in to their accounts normally, so they do not immediately realize that their accounts have been stolen.
The Singapore Police is reminding the public to identify and stop using unknown websites in search engines posing as WhatsApp.
