On June 19, Macau police alerted local residents to beware of a deep fake video circulating on social media platforms. The video steals the mage of the Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai in a fake online investment advertisement.
The deep fake video was discovered on social media on June 18, according to a statement released by Macau authorities. It used footage of the Chief Executive at a public event, digitally altered through artificial intelligence to promote a fraudulent investment platform.

According to the police, no victims of the fraudulent advertisement have been identified so far. However, the video reflects a growing global trend in scams, where artificial intelligence technology is increasingly being used to facilitate fraudulent activities. Macau authorities continue to monitor such information and intend to trace and dismantle scam networks that use deepfake technology.
Macau police noted that such scams have occurred in the region before and warned that fraudsters are increasingly exploiting the images of public figures to mislead the public. Therefore, police warned people to be wary of investment opportunities from unknown sources, especially those promoted through social media platforms and message apps.
A spokesman warned Macau residents not to trust certain investment schemes simply because they appear to be endorsed by public figures.
Before investing, make sure that the investment opportunity is legitimate by checking with your local financial regulator to avoid being scammed.
