The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has issued a warning against fake websites, alerting the public to the scam.
The regulator awared of fraudsters posing as the ASIC website and online service system ASIC Connect in an attempt to obtain sensitive information such as personal information, passwords, contact details and payment information from consumers.
Examples of fake ASIC website
In order to convince the visitors, the fake websites not only mimic ASIC's pages and show them fabricated results, but may also include links to the genuine ASIC website.
The fake websites mimicked the official regulator's URLs, but the Commission stressed that the legitimate ASIC Connect are asicconnect.asic.gov.au and connectonline.asic.gov.au. It urged users to carefully verify website addresses before entering personal information—especially when manually typing a URL—to ensure they are accessing authentic ASIC online services.
ASIC also encouraged members of the public to report such fraudulent websites by providing details and screenshots of the website to the regulator.
The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), established in 1998, oversees the country's companies, markets and financial services under the Australian Securities and Investments Commission Act 2001 to protect local financial consumers.
