Australia’s National Anti-Scam Centre (NASC) has issued a warning after scammers were found impersonating phone numbers belonging to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to steal personal information. These phone numbers are publicly available on the agency’s official website.
NASC posts a warning on social media
The NASC revealed that in some reported cases, scammers posed as ACCC representatives, requesting sensitive data such as passwords or bank details. In others, they misused the ACCC acronym to impersonate unrelated organisations and communicated in languages other than English.
The ACCC confirmed it does not make calls from its reception numbers and urged the public to ignore unsolicited requests for personal details.
“The ACCC and the National Anti-Scam Centre will never ‘cold’ call or email consumers and ask for your personal information such as your passwords, bank details or answers to security questions. The ACCC does not charge money for its services and would never threaten or pressure you to stay on the line,” the agency stated.
Australians are advised to hang up immediately on suspicious calls and avoid clicking unknown links or downloading attachments from messages. If uncertain, independently verify the source before responding.
